Automatic sliding doors and swing-door operators in Oshawa — which one an opening needs

These are two different products, not two brands of one, and the difference decides what an opening in Oshawa actually needs. An automatic sliding door is a purpose-built package — leaves, framing, header operator and sensors engineered together — and the panel slides, so it needs no swing arc. An automatic door opener for a swing door is a motor added to a hinged door, usually one already hanging. Canuck Door Systems installs and services both across Oshawa; traffic and floor space settle the choice before budget does.

The full guide

Automatic doors for the work Oshawa buildings do

The sectors that dominate Oshawa — advanced manufacturing and automotive, healthcare and life sciences, post-secondary education and technology — each ask something different of an automatic entrance.

Advanced manufacturing and automotive

Personnel doors on plants earn operators where hands are full: push-plate and wave activation on the routes between floor and office, and universal washroom packages where the office block needs them.

Healthcare and life sciences

The heaviest users of the trade: low-energy operators on corridors and exam wings, sliders on main vestibules, and universal washroom packages with the lock, operator and indicator sequenced correctly.

Post-secondary education and technology

Barrier-free entrances are the ask: low-energy operators on the accessible route, sliders on busy vestibules, and universal washroom packages — the accessibility checklist, installed and serviced.

Logistics and warehousing

A warehouse’s automatic door is at the front, not the dock: a barrier-free operator on the office entrance, and a slider where staff cross between office and floor all shift.

Retail and commercial services

The classic automatic slider: continuous two-way traffic, carts and strollers, no swing arc eating the vestibule — with break-out leaves where the exit route demands them.

Schools & institutions

Schools and campuses retrofit accessibility one door at a time: low-energy operators with push plates mounted where students can reach them, timed to hold the door for a wheelchair.

Common questions about automatic doors

How much does it cost to make an existing door automatic?

Adding a low-energy operator to a door that already hangs correctly is the least expensive way into automation, and the price is driven by three things rather than by the operator itself: whether there is power at the head of the opening, whether the frame and leaf can carry the load, and how many activation points you want. Running a new circuit to a header on an existing masonry wall routinely costs more than the operator does. That circuit is electrical work, so it has to be run by a certified electrical contractor, and it normally sits outside our scope. What we do is tell you exactly what the operator needs at the header before you order, so the electrician can be booked in alongside the door rather than chased afterwards.

What are the common problems with automatic doors?

In rough order of how often we are called for them: sensors that have drifted, been knocked or been blinded by sunlight or a new floor finish; dirty or worn rollers and tracks on a slider, which show up as a door that shudders or stalls; failed or misadjusted safety beams that leave the door stuck open or reversing at random; belts, motors and control boards at the end of their life; and damage from something that hit the door. The single most common underlying cause is not the operator at all — it is a building change nobody connected to the entrance, like a new mat, a new sign or a re-tiled floor.

Do automatic doors have to be tied into the fire alarm?

Often, and it is one of the details that gets missed on a retrofit quotation. Where a door is on an egress route or in a rated separation, its behaviour on alarm has to be specified — some doors are required to open and stay open, others to close and latch, and holding a rated door open on a magnet is only permitted where it releases on alarm. The rule follows the opening's role in the building, not the operator's brand, so it is decided with the door, not after it.
