Glass Aluminum Doors and Windows in Oshawa: Custom-Finished Windspec Systems for the MTO Patrol Yard at Highways 401 and 418

At the Ministry of Transportation, Ontario's maintenance patrol yard at Highways 401 and 418, the building's windows and entrances are aluminum. Amico Design Build Inc. was the general contractor. Canuck supplied and installed the windows, vents, entrance frames and doors, and the automatic operators on two entrances.

This was a custom-fabrication contract: nothing came from stock. Every window, vent and door was made to the architectural schedule and finished in a custom Duranar coating.

What went in

The windows, vents, frames and doors are all in the same custom Duranar finish, so they match. Duranar is an architectural coating applied in the factory, known for holding its colour for a long time.

The vents are the part of a window that opens, with screens, set in the same finish as the fixed glass around them. The automatic operators make both entrances accessible: the doors open from a push button, with no need to pull.

Built to the schedule

The contract came with a detailed product specification, and the hardware had to be coordinated to it. The drawings were reviewed extensively by the client before anything was made.

We received the project in December 2023. The client reviewed the drawings extensively, to make sure the products matched the specification. Once they were approved, production started right away, so the systems would be ready for installation in June 2024.

Installation ran from May to June 2024: the windows, vents, frames, doors and glazing, caulking at every perimeter for a watertight seal, and the automatic operators on the two entrances.
