Residential Doors & Garage Doors
A commercial door contractor that looks after houses. Garage doors, openers and the repairs that go with them, plus entry, patio and interior doors — fitted and serviced across Toronto and the GTA by the same crews that maintain the overhead doors on warehouses, dealerships and schools. Since 1979, with a line answered 24 hours a day.

Most door companies are either a commercial contractor or a garage-door outfit. Canuck has been both since 1979: the bulk of our work is overhead doors, storefronts and fire-rated assemblies on buildings across the GTA, and the same technicians, trucks and parts stock come to houses. If you are here because a garage door will not open, start with garage door repair — or call 800-522-6825, which is answered 24 hours a day.
What we do for houses
The residential pages published so far. They cover the calls we get most — a garage door that has stopped working, a patio door that sticks or will not lock, and shutters over a window that needs closing off properly. New garage doors, entry, patio and interior doors are all work we do today and are quoted on the same phone number; their pages are being written through 2026.
Garage doors & openers
The door you have put back together, or the opener replaced. Same crews and the same trucks that maintain the overhead doors on warehouses across the GTA.
The door won't open, won't close, or came down with a bang. All makes, whoever installed it, with a 24/7 line.
LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers — belt, chain and jackshaft — supplied and fitted, with the remotes and keypads that go with them.
Patio door repair
A sliding door that sticks, jumps its track or will not lock is usually rollers, a worn track or a tired handle set — repaired on the door you already have.
Sliding patio doors that stick, jump the track or will not lock — rollers, tracks, handles and glass units on an existing door.
Security shutters
Closing a house or a ground-floor window off properly — for a cottage left through the winter, a repeatedly targeted window, or a room that needs to go dark.
Aluminum rolling shutters over windows and doors, for security, storm protection and blackout, manual or motorised.
Where a homeowner should start
The door won't open
A bang and a dead door is a broken spring; crooked in the track is a cable. Both are diagnosed on the phone before anyone is dispatched.
It works, but badly
Screeching, shuddering, or stopping short. The least expensive visit there is, and the one that prevents the expensive one.
The opener has died
Roughly a third of "the door is broken" calls are the opener. We replace rather than rebuild them — LiftMaster and Chamberlain, usually fitted the same visit.
The door looks tired
Rust along the bottom, dents, a colour that dates the house. A new door is the single biggest change you can make to a street elevation.
The garage is freezing
On an attached garage the door is the largest uninsulated surface in most houses, and the rooms above it are the ones that feel it.
You're renovating
Entry, patio and interior doors, measured and hung properly — the difference between a door that shuts and a door that seals.
Something got broken
A vehicle into the door, a forced entry, storm damage. Photographed, secured, and invoiced in the format an insurer expects.
It's 2am
An attached garage that cannot be closed is an open door into the house. That is an emergency at any hour, and the line is answered.
What makes a commercial contractor different on a house
Not a slogan — three practical differences, and one honest limitation.
- The diagnosis is better, because the doors are harder. A technician who services doors doing two hundred cycles a day recognises an out-of-balance door, a mismatched spring or a failing bearing immediately. Most residential faults are the same faults, slower.
- The parts are the same parts. Cables, drums, rollers, bearings, brackets and photo eyes are common across residential and light commercial, which is why they are already on the truck.
- We will tell you when not to spend. Repeat visits are worth less to us than a maintenance relationship, so "this door has two years left, here is what both options cost" is a normal thing to hear from us.
- The limitation: we are not a same-hour, van-on-every-corner garage-door franchise, and we do not pretend to be. A repair is usually booked within a day or two, and a new door is made to your opening over weeks. What we offer instead is that the arrival window and the number we give you on the phone are the real ones.
Springs: one visit on a house, two on a commercial door
The most common garage door failure is a broken torsion spring, and the most common question is how fast it can be fixed. On a house, normally one visit of one to two hours. We carry the common residential spring sizes along with the cables, drums, bearings and brackets that go with them, so the door is usually diagnosed, re-sprung and rebalanced before the technician leaves. An uncommon size is ordered and fitted on a booked return — and at 2am the honest answer is different again, because the nearest truck is not guaranteed to be carrying your size: there the job is to secure the door and the repair may follow.
The distinction worth knowing, because it is the opposite answer: on a commercial overhead door every spring is wound to that individual door over 1–2 days, so those are two visits. Same trucks, same technicians, genuinely different part. What does not change either way is that the rating comes off the door's real weight and drum size — a spring fitted because it was on the van is how doors end up out of balance and openers end up dying young. The full detail is on garage door spring & cable replacement.
Four decades of doors for names Ontario knows — Canada’s Wonderland, Tim Hortons, Canadian Tire, the LCBO, Metrolinx, Marriott & Hilton hotels, the University of Toronto — plus warehouses, dealerships, schools and several thousand houses across the GTA. Dependable people, quality products, since 1979.
What we do not do
Worth saying plainly, so nobody spends a phone call finding out:
- Windows on their own. We glaze and reglaze commercially, but a house window replacement is not our trade.
- General renovation. We fit doors and the frames they hang in. Framing out a new opening, drywall and finishing are somebody else's job — though we will happily tell your contractor what the opening has to be.
- Doors we cannot get parts for. Where a section or a profile is genuinely discontinued, we will say so and quote the replacement rather than sell a repair that will not last.

Residential repair travels well — the parts are on the truck and the job is an hour or two. A new door is a measure and a fit, so it travels further still. What travels worst is a 2am call-out to the far end of the belt, and we will say so on the phone rather than leave you waiting. See all service areas
What our customers say
After having Canuck Door Systems replace the springs in our garage door opening system earlier this year, we continued to have problems with the operation of the door. After an attempt to fix this did not last, Stan ascertained that we needed a new motor, which Sergei installed. …

My garage door had issues last week after the winter storm. As soon as I closed it opened again. There was a sticker on the machine and I googled the company and had good reviews. I called the company and was provided service the same day and the issue was identified. …

What residential work costs — and how to get a real number
There is no honest single price for “a garage door”, and a “from” figure would be a number chosen to look good rather than to be true. What actually moves it is short enough to list:
- Single or double, and the size of the opening — every door is made to it
- Steel, aluminum and glass, or wood — and whether the door is insulated
- Whether the opening, the frame and the headroom are sound, or need work first
- The opener — belt, chain or jackshaft, and whether the existing one is being kept or replaced
- Windows, hardware and the finish, which is where two otherwise identical doors diverge
- On a repair — what failed, whether the part is on the truck, and the hour of the call
A repair is quoted as attendance on the phone and the full number once a technician has seen the door. A new door is measured on site and quoted firm and itemised, at no charge — including what happens to the old door.

Common questions
Do you actually do residential work, or mainly commercial?
Both, and it is worth being straight about the balance. Most of our work is commercial and industrial — overhead doors on warehouses, storefronts, fire-rated assemblies, dock equipment. Residential is the smaller half of the business, run by the same technicians out of the same shop. The practical effect for a homeowner is a company whose service trucks are already out at 6am for someone else, and whose technicians see more doors in a month than a domestic-only outfit sees in a year.
What can you do for a house?
Garage doors and openers, and everything that goes wrong with them — springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sections, sensors and remotes. New entry doors, patio doors, interior and closet doors. Rolling security shutters over windows and doors. What we do not do is windows on their own, glazing for a house that is not part of a door, or general renovation work.
How quickly can someone come out?
The line is answered 24 hours a day and trucks dispatch from Mississauga. On an emergency call we give you an arrival window based on where a technician actually is at that moment — not a published response time we could not hold to for every address in Southern Ontario. Ordinary repairs are usually booked within a day or two, and a booking that is not urgent is materially less expensive than a call-out that is.
Do you work on doors you did not install?
Yes, and it is most of the residential work we do. Cables, rollers, hinges, drums, tracks and seals fit across makes, and a garage door spring is matched to the door's weight rather than bought as a brand part, so who supplied the door does not decide whether we can repair it. Two exceptions. A genuinely obsolete door whose sections can no longer be matched is a replacement, and we will say so. And openers we replace rather than repair, whoever made them — the reasoning is on our opener page.
How long does a new garage door take?
Roughly 4–6 weeks to produce it once the opening has been measured, then 1–2 weeks to schedule the install — so about six to eight weeks in total. Doors are made to your opening, so there is no stock unit to pull off a shelf, and the finish, the window layout and the insulation level are all decided before it is built. A like-for-like replacement into a sound opening is a day, usually with the garage usable again the same afternoon.
Is it worth insulating a garage door?
On an attached garage, almost always. The garage shares a wall and usually a ceiling with heated rooms, and an uninsulated door is the largest uninsulated surface in most houses. On a detached garage it matters much less, and the money is better spent on the door's construction and hardware than on its R-value. What we will not do is sell an insulated door on the strength of a heating saving we cannot substantiate for your house.
Which garage door openers do you fit?
LiftMaster and Chamberlain — belt drive for a garage under a bedroom, chain drive where noise does not matter, and jackshaft (wall-mount) where there is no headroom for a rail or the ceiling is needed for storage. We replace any make with one of those, whoever fitted the original. What we do not do is rebuild a failed opener: a board or a gear kit costs a large fraction of a new unit and goes into a machine the same age throughout.
Do you take emergency calls to houses at night?
Yes. A garage door that will not close leaves an attached house open, and that is treated as an emergency at any hour. What we will also do is tell you honestly when a fault can wait until morning at the ordinary rate — a noisy door, a dead remote, a slow opener. The truck livery has read commercial, industrial and residential for years; the after-hours number is the same one.
Garage door stuck, or a house full of tired doors?
Call 800-522-6825 and describe what it is doing — the line is answered 24 hours a day. For a new door, we measure the opening and send a firm, itemised quote at no charge.
