Automatic sliding doors and swing-door operators in Pickering — which one an opening needs

These are two different products, not two brands of one, and the difference decides what an opening in Pickering actually needs. An automatic sliding door is a purpose-built package — leaves, framing, header operator and sensors engineered together — and the panel slides, so it needs no swing arc. An automatic door opener for a swing door is a motor added to a hinged door, usually one already hanging. Canuck Door Systems installs and services both across Pickering; traffic and floor space settle the choice before budget does.

The full guide

Automatic doors for the work Pickering buildings do

The sectors that dominate Pickering — energy, engineering and environmental, advanced manufacturing and aerospace, transportation, logistics and warehousing — each ask something different of an automatic entrance.

Advanced manufacturing and aerospace

Personnel doors on plants earn operators where hands are full: push-plate and wave activation on the routes between floor and office, and universal washroom packages where the office block needs them.

Transportation, logistics and warehousing

A warehouse’s automatic door is at the front, not the dock: a barrier-free operator on the office entrance, and a slider where staff cross between office and floor all shift.

Agri-food and food processing

Touchless is the point: wave-activated operators keep hands off door hardware between wash stations, offices and production — activation chosen to work with gloves and sanitation routines.

Film, television and entertainment

Guests arrive with their hands full: entrance sliders that open before the luggage cart reaches them, and swing operators on accessible rooms and amenity doors.

Schools & institutions

Schools and campuses retrofit accessibility one door at a time: low-energy operators with push plates mounted where students can reach them, timed to hold the door for a wheelchair.

Condos & property management

Condo lobbies pair an operator with the entrance the fobs already control: barrier-free access for residents, sequenced with the intercom and electric lock rather than fighting them.

Common questions about automatic doors

What is the difference between a door closer and a door operator?

A closer is a mechanical device that shuts a door you opened yourself — a spring and a hydraulic damper, no power. An operator opens the door for you, under electric or electro-hydraulic power, and then controls the closing as well. They look similar from the floor because both live in a box above the door, and enquiries mix them up constantly. If nobody has to pull the door, it is an operator. If the question is only "how fast and how hard does it close", it is a closer, and that is door hardware rather than automation.

Do automatic doors have to be tied into the fire alarm?

Often, and it is one of the details that gets missed on a retrofit quotation. Where a door is on an egress route or in a rated separation, its behaviour on alarm has to be specified — some doors are required to open and stay open, others to close and latch, and holding a rated door open on a magnet is only permitted where it releases on alarm. The rule follows the opening's role in the building, not the operator's brand, so it is decided with the door, not after it.

Are automatic doors required by law in Ontario?

Not as a blanket rule. The requirement comes from the Ontario Building Code's barrier-free provisions, which apply when you build or renovate, and from the AODA's Design of Public Spaces standard, which covers certain new and redeveloped exterior paths and entrances. Existing buildings are not ordered to retrofit every door. In practice most of our operator work is triggered by a permit, a renovation, an accessibility complaint or a tenant requirement rather than by an inspector arriving unannounced — and where the code does apply, the entrance also has to meet clear-width and opening-force limits, not just open by itself.
