Automatic Doors across Toronto

We work throughout Toronto — Downtown core, Liberty Village, Leaside, The Junction and the blocks around them. The buildings here are mostly office towers, retail and hospitality, and each puts different demands on a door: traffic volume, insurance and fire requirements, and how much downtime an opening can afford. Toronto’s 2,794,356 residents keep those buildings busy.

We have completed 242 automatic door jobs in Toronto since 2020 — including work on Bathurst Street, Yonge Street, Queen Street East and Bloor Street West.

Automatic sliding doors and swing-door operators in Toronto — which one an opening needs

These are two different products, not two brands of one, and the difference decides what an opening in Toronto actually needs. An automatic sliding door is a purpose-built package — leaves, framing, header operator and sensors engineered together — and the panel slides, so it needs no swing arc. An automatic door opener for a swing door is a motor added to a hinged door, usually one already hanging. Canuck Door Systems installs and services both across Toronto; traffic and floor space settle the choice before budget does.

Automatic doors for the work Toronto buildings do

The sectors that dominate Toronto — office towers, retail, hospitality — each ask something different of an automatic entrance.

Office towers

Barrier-free entrances are the ask: low-energy operators on the accessible route, sliders on busy vestibules, and universal washroom packages — the accessibility checklist, installed and serviced.

Retail

The classic automatic slider: continuous two-way traffic, carts and strollers, no swing arc eating the vestibule — with break-out leaves where the exit route demands them.

Hospitality

Guests arrive with their hands full: entrance sliders that open before the luggage cart reaches them, and swing operators on accessible rooms and amenity doors.

Institutional

Schools and campuses retrofit accessibility one door at a time: low-energy operators with push plates mounted where students can reach them, timed to hold the door for a wheelchair.

Condominium property management

Condo lobbies pair an operator with the entrance the fobs already control: barrier-free access for residents, sequenced with the intercom and electric lock rather than fighting them.

Food & pharma processing

Touchless is the point: wave-activated operators keep hands off door hardware between wash stations, offices and production — activation chosen to work with gloves and sanitation routines.

Common questions about automatic doors

How much does it cost to make an existing door automatic?

Adding a low-energy operator to a door that already hangs correctly is the least expensive way into automation, and the price is driven by three things rather than by the operator itself: whether there is power at the head of the opening, whether the frame and leaf can carry the load, and how many activation points you want. Running a new circuit to a header on an existing masonry wall routinely costs more than the operator does. That circuit is electrical work, so it has to be run by a certified electrical contractor, and it normally sits outside our scope. What we do is tell you exactly what the operator needs at the header before you order, so the electrician can be booked in alongside the door rather than chased afterwards.

How long does an automatic door take to supply and install?

Typically 4–6 weeks to produce the door once shop drawings are approved, then 1–2 weeks to schedule the job and install it — so around 5–8 weeks in total, depending on the size of the project. An automatic slider runs to the longer end because the operator, the framing and the glass all have to arrive together. A standard automatic door operator is a different matter entirely: those are stock items, so fitting one to a door that already hangs correctly is usually 2–3 days rather than weeks. Emergency repairs are a different clock again and are dispatched 24/7. On site, a single automatic entrance is usually installed in a day; a full package on a general contractor's build runs over several weeks.

Can you open an automatic door in a power failure?

Yes, and on an egress route it is a requirement rather than a nicety. Sliding doors on an exit route are built with break-out panels: push the leaf hard from inside and it swings out of its track to give a clear opening. Swing doors with a low-energy operator can simply be pushed open manually when the power is off — the operator declutches. What you should not assume is that a given door does this: break-out is a specified feature, and a slider bought without it stays shut. We confirm which behaviour an existing door has as part of an inspection.
