Security Shutters & Grilles across Waterloo
We work throughout Waterloo — David Johnston Research + Technology Park, Generation Park Waterloo, Northland Industrial Area, Uptown Waterloo and the blocks around them. The buildings here are mostly technology and knowledge economy, advanced manufacturing and robotics and financial and insurance services, and each puts different demands on a door: traffic volume, insurance and fire requirements, and how much downtime an opening can afford. Waterloo’s 121,436 residents keep those buildings busy.

Broken shutter, grille or gate in Waterloo: we dispatch 24/7.
Waterloo is roughly a 75-minute run from our Mississauga shop — less if a technician is already in the area. Planned work, measures and maintenance travel there without difficulty; on a middle-of-the-night emergency we will tell you the drive time on the phone, and what to do to make the opening safe until we arrive.
Emergency board-up, security and make-safe first — permanent repair scheduled after.
Which closure fits the opening
We specify to the opening rather than to one catalogue, and we service any make. Most of what goes on a Waterloo building comes from three manufacturers — Pentagon, MobilFlex and Emart — and the opening usually decides which one before the budget does.
Pentagon security shutters — storefronts, counters and houses
Pentagon build rolling security shutters in three lines, and between them they cover a shop front, a counter and a house window. We supply, install and service all three in Waterloo, and we carry the parts that fail first.

MobilFlex rolling and side-folding closures
MobilFlex, from Québec, build the closures on mall units, bank lobbies, airport shops and school serveries — the ones that must lock a space in Waterloo and still let people see into it. They come two ways: rolling up into a coil, or folding sideways into a stack at the jamb, and which one suits an opening in Waterloo is usually decided by the headroom above it.

Emart expandable security gates
An expandable, or scissor, gate is the simplest closure there is: a steel lattice that pulls across the opening and folds back to a narrow stack at the side. Emart Factory, a Toronto supplier on Magnetic Drive, sell them for storefronts, pharmacies, warehouses and homes, and we measure, fit and repair them in Waterloo — most often on a back door or a unit in Waterloo with no room for a coil.

Inside the glass, outside it, or not allowed at all in Waterloo
Three positions are possible and they are not equally available. What a Waterloo tenant may fit is often settled by somebody else before price is discussed at all.
Security shutters on houses and cottages in Waterloo
Houses are a real part of this work: basement and ground-floor windows, a cottage closed for the winter, a garage, a sliding patio door. Two products do most of it.

A shutter slows a break-in down; it does not stop one
No grille, gate or shutter makes a building in Waterloo impossible to get into. What it does is turn a ten-second smash-and-grab into a noisy job with tools — and that time is only worth something if the rest of the building uses it. Treat the closure as one layer of a security plan for the Waterloo property, not the plan itself.
What a shutter or grille costs in Waterloo, and what moves the number
Everything here is built to a measured opening, so there is no list price to quote. Three things move a number more than width does.
After hours, when it will not go up — on any make
A shutter jammed down is a business in Waterloo that cannot open, and one jammed up is a business that cannot close. We repair Pentagon, MobilFlex and Emart closures and most other makes in Waterloo, whoever installed them.

Shutters and grilles for the work Waterloo buildings do
The sectors that dominate Waterloo — technology and knowledge economy, advanced manufacturing and robotics, financial and insurance services — each have something different to shut away, and a different hour to do it in.
Technology and knowledge economy
Reception hatches, mail rooms, server and comms cupboards, the coffee bar that shuts at three. Small openings, and the ones people actually operate every day — so a counter shutter with a decent lift and a proper lock beats a big shutter specified for a door somebody props open instead.
Advanced manufacturing and robotics
A plant closes fewer openings than it protects: the tool crib, the maintenance store, the office window onto the shop floor. A shutter over a service counter goes up at shift change and down at the end of it — which means the operation matters more than the specification, and a crank in an awkward corner gets left open.
Higher education and research
Canteens, tuck shops, gyms and libraries inside a building that stays open around them. A folding grille across a corridor closes a wing after hours and stacks flat against a jamb in the morning; a counter shutter closes the servery without closing the hall. Exit routes govern both.
Healthcare & clinics
Pharmacy windows, records rooms, cash and specimen hatches. The closure is usually small, always locked, and inspected as part of the department rather than the building — and on an exit route it has to be openable from inside without a key, which rules some hardware out before price does.
Condos & property management
Parking entries, bike and locker rooms, amenity counters and the party room bar. The board’s problem is usually not the first fitting but the eleventh year — a curtain nobody has serviced, a motor with no manual override, and a shutter stuck half down across the only vehicle entrance at seven in the morning.
Hotels & hospitality
Bars, poolside servery hatches and shop units inside the lobby, all of which shut while the building stays awake. Noise matters more here than anywhere else: a curtain running in worn guides above a guest room is a complaint, and it is usually the guides rather than the curtain.

Common questions about security shutters & grilles
Can you service a shutter another company installed?
Yes — most of the shutters we look after came from somebody else. Slats, guides, bottom bars, locks, springs and motors are largely cross-compatible or can be matched, which is not true of automatic door operators. Where a curtain is genuinely beyond economical repair we will say so and quote a replacement against the guides and structure you already have, which is much less expensive than starting from nothing.
What goes wrong with them?
Almost always the guides and the bottom bar, not the curtain. Something catches the bottom bar, or the shutter is forced when its lock is still engaged, and the slats come out of the guide. After that: motors and limit switches on powered units, springs and barrels on manual ones, and slats damaged by an impact. Grit and salt in the guides is the winter version of the same problem. Most of it is repairable in place, and slats can be replaced individually rather than replacing a whole curtain.
Can a security shutter be motorized, and should it be?
Yes, and the honest test is how often it cycles and who cycles it. A shutter opened and closed once a day by staff can stay on a chain hoist for years. One that opens several times a day, is very wide or very heavy, or is operated by whoever is on shift, should be motorized — manual operation is where the damage comes from. A motor also brings a key switch, remote or timer, and a manual override for a power failure, which is not optional on an opening people leave through.
