We work throughout Kitchener — Huron Business Park, Bridgeport Business Park, Grand River Business Park, Trillium Industrial Park and the blocks around them. The buildings here are mostly advanced manufacturing and automotive parts, technology and digital media and health care, institutional and life sciences, and each puts different demands on a door: traffic volume, insurance and fire requirements, and how much downtime an opening can afford. Kitchener’s 256,885 residents keep those buildings busy.

We have completed 16 automatic door jobs in Kitchener since 2022 — including work on Seabrook Drive and King Street East.

Automatic sliding doors and swing-door operators in Kitchener — which one an opening needs

These are two different products, not two brands of one, and the difference decides what an opening in Kitchener actually needs. An automatic sliding door is a purpose-built package — leaves, framing, header operator and sensors engineered together — and the panel slides, so it needs no swing arc. An automatic door opener for a swing door is a motor added to a hinged door, usually one already hanging. Canuck Door Systems installs and services both across Kitchener; traffic and floor space settle the choice before budget does.

The full guide

Automatic doors for the work Kitchener buildings do

The sectors that dominate Kitchener — advanced manufacturing and automotive parts, technology and digital media, health care, institutional and life sciences — each ask something different of an automatic entrance.

Advanced manufacturing and automotive parts

Personnel doors on plants earn operators where hands are full: push-plate and wave activation on the routes between floor and office, and universal washroom packages where the office block needs them.

Technology and digital media

Barrier-free entrances are the ask: low-energy operators on the accessible route, sliders on busy vestibules, and universal washroom packages — the accessibility checklist, installed and serviced.

Health care, institutional and life sciences

The heaviest users of the trade: low-energy operators on corridors and exam wings, sliders on main vestibules, and universal washroom packages with the lock, operator and indicator sequenced correctly.

Wholesale, logistics and retail trade

A warehouse’s automatic door is at the front, not the dock: a barrier-free operator on the office entrance, and a slider where staff cross between office and floor all shift.

Schools & institutions

Schools and campuses retrofit accessibility one door at a time: low-energy operators with push plates mounted where students can reach them, timed to hold the door for a wheelchair.

Condos & property management

Condo lobbies pair an operator with the entrance the fobs already control: barrier-free access for residents, sequenced with the intercom and electric lock rather than fighting them.

Common questions about automatic doors

How often do automatic doors need to be inspected?

The industry standard is a daily safety check by the building's own staff and a full inspection once a year by a certified inspector. Our technicians hold AAADM certification for exactly this — the annual inspection of automatic pedestrian doors — and the daily check takes about a minute: watch the door cycle, confirm it does not close on anything, confirm the signage and guide rails are still in place. Skipping the annual inspection is a liability question more than a maintenance one, because an automatic door is a powered machine that the public walks through.

Are automatic doors required by law in Ontario?

Not as a blanket rule. The requirement comes from the Ontario Building Code's barrier-free provisions, which apply when you build or renovate, and from the AODA's Design of Public Spaces standard, which covers certain new and redeveloped exterior paths and entrances. Existing buildings are not ordered to retrofit every door. In practice most of our operator work is triggered by a permit, a renovation, an accessibility complaint or a tenant requirement rather than by an inspector arriving unannounced — and where the code does apply, the entrance also has to meet clear-width and opening-force limits, not just open by itself.

Can you open an automatic door in a power failure?

Yes, and on an egress route it is a requirement rather than a nicety. Sliding doors on an exit route are built with break-out panels: push the leaf hard from inside and it swings out of its track to give a clear opening. Swing doors with a low-energy operator can simply be pushed open manually when the power is off — the operator declutches. What you should not assume is that a given door does this: break-out is a specified feature, and a slider bought without it stays shut. We confirm which behaviour an existing door has as part of an inspection.
