Yes, and it should be treated as a requirement rather than an option. A door that swings both ways, is pushed without stopping and has no window is a collision waiting to happen — most often between a person carrying something and a person on the other side. Window size and position should suit the traffic: low enough to see a child or a cart in a retail or restaurant setting, and large enough to see a pedestrian from a forklift seat in a warehouse.

A #4 brushed finish is the commercial standard — a directional satin grain that hides handling marks and cleans easily. Mirror (#8) is available where appearance leads, and bead-blast finishes where a uniform matte surface is wanted. The grain direction matters on a door: vertical grain on the leaf is normal, and it should run consistently across a pair.

Carriers, hinges, track sections, gaskets, thresholds and locking gear are all serviceable, and the usual complaints — heavy to fold, dragging, not sealing, leaves out of line — are wear and adjustment rather than the end of the wall. Where a leaf is beyond repair the framing and track can often be reused. If the system is genuinely obsolete we will say so rather than chase a part that no longer exists.

Only if the opening is in a fire-rated wall or separation — and then it is a legal requirement rather than a choice. A fire shutter is a different, labelled product that closes automatically on alarm and has to be drop- tested to prove it still does. A security shutter in the same opening does not satisfy the code. An operator retrofitted to an existing door is much faster: equipment in a few weeks and usually a single day on site. Repairs are a different clock entirely — dispatched 24/7, with common sensors and parts carried on the trucks.

It is the same kind of door doing a harder job. A dock door is the sectional overhead door in a dock opening, and it differs from a shipping or drive-in door mainly in what happens to it: trailers reverse into it, it cycles far more often, and its bottom section and weather seal take damage that an interior door never sees. We repair both, and on a dock position the door and the equipment beneath it are attended in the same trip rather than by two separate contractors.
