Common questions about doors
What is the difference between a hollow metal door and a steel door?
In commercial work, nothing — hollow metal is what the trade calls a commercial steel door, and the two terms are used interchangeably on drawings and in quotes. A "commercial-grade" door means exactly this assembly: a steel leaf built to an ANSI/SDI level, hung in a steel frame, prepped at the factory for commercial hardware. The distinction worth making is against residential steel entry doors: those are an insulated slab in a wood or composite frame, sold as a finished unit, and they are not built for continuous traffic, commercial hardware or a fire label. They are a different product with a different price, and we supply those too — ask for the residential line rather than this one.
Can you match stainless hardware to the door?
Yes, and in a washdown area you should. Hinges, locks, exit devices, pulls, kick plates and thresholds are all available in stainless, and mixing plated carbon-steel hardware onto a stainless door reintroduces the corrosion the door was specified to avoid. Continuous stainless hinges are common on washdown openings, because there are fewer joints to hold water.
Does an operator make an entrance code-compliant on its own?
No, and this is the most expensive misunderstanding in accessibility work. The Ontario Building Code's barrier-free requirements cover the clear width of the doorway, the space beside the latch so a person in a chair can approach it, the force needed to open the door, thresholds and the route on both sides. An operator answers the force question and part of the approach one. If the doorway is too narrow or the landing is too tight, the opening still fails — which is why we survey the whole entrance rather than quoting a box on a header.
Can hardware be added to an existing frameless glass door?
Usually not, and this is the single most important thing to know about all-glass doors. Tempered glass must be cut, drilled and notched before it is tempered — once it has been through the furnace it cannot be modified, and drilling it will shatter the whole leaf. So adding a lock, a patch fitting, a maglock bracket or a different pull that needs a new hole normally means a new leaf, not a modification. Tell us the hardware you want at the measure, and it goes into the glass order.
How do I know when dock bumpers need replacing?
Four signs, any one of which is enough. The bumper is worn to roughly half its original thickness. Any steel — bolt heads, washers, the mounting angle — has become visible or is being struck. A laminated bumper's pads have begun to separate or fan out. Or the trailer is now touching something it should not: fresh damage to the seal, the leveler lip, or scrape marks on the wall are all evidence the bumpers have stopped doing their job.
Can you match the door to our brand colours?
Usually, yes — factory finishes cover a wide range and custom colours are available on most commercial panels, which matters for dealerships, franchises and anywhere the door faces the street. Say so at the quote stage rather than afterwards: a custom finish is a manufacturing decision, and retrofitting it means painting a door that was never meant to be painted.
Four decades of doors for names Ontario knows — Canada’s Wonderland, Tim Hortons, Canadian Tire, the LCBO, Metrolinx, Marriott & Hilton hotels, the University of Toronto — plus thousands of businesses across the GTA. Dependable people, quality products, since 1979.
