Shelburne Dental was renovating its clinic in Shelburne, inside and out. Canuck replaced the exterior storefront doors and windows, and supplied and installed the interior glass and aluminum frames and the wood doors along the clinic's corridors. Keogh Construction was the general contractor, and the clinic's grand opening date was fixed.

We finished on time, in April 2025, but the time available for making the products was much shorter than planned, for a reason every renovation will recognise.

Four decades of doors for names Ontario knows — Canada’s Wonderland, Tim Hortons, Canadian Tire, the LCBO, Metrolinx, Marriott & Hilton hotels, the University of Toronto — plus thousands of businesses across the GTA. Dependable people, quality products, since 1979.

Outside, the storefront runs full height from the ground to the soffit, bringing daylight in all along the front. Inside, the same aluminum framing carries the glass along the corridors, and the wood doors sit in aluminum frames with glazed sidelites, some with frosted bands for privacy.

Measuring openings that weren't ready

The renovation made new openings, and they took a while to be ready for accurate measuring. That left only a few weeks to have every product made before the grand opening.

We had drawings, and they went through a few revisions before approval, which did not take long. But drawings are not openings. On a renovation where the openings are new, every one has to be measured on site before the door or frame for it is ordered, and that meant several visits to check each opening against the drawings.

The openings took longer than expected to be ready. With the grand opening fixed, waiting for all of them was not an option, and some products were ordered before their openings were finished. That caused minor issues with a few opening sizes, which were resolved on site.

Finished on time

The work was completed right on time for the grand opening. One door was scratched and was replaced rather than touched up. On a new clinic, a door with a visible scratch is not finished.

Questions this job answers

Why measure openings on site when there are drawings?

Because on a renovation the openings are built on site, and they rarely match the drawings exactly. Doors and frames are made to measure, so each opening needs checking before the order is placed. On this job that took several visits.

What if the opening date doesn't wait for the openings?

Then some products are ordered before their openings are ready, and there is a risk of small size issues. That is what happened on this job; the issues were minor and resolved on site, and the clinic opened on time.

Can a clinic have glass walls and still keep privacy?

Yes. Glass and aluminum frames let daylight through the building, and frosted bands on the glass give privacy at eye level, as on this job.

What happens if a new door is damaged during installation?

It should be replaced. On this job a door that was scratched was replaced.
