The buildings here are mostly manufacturing and industrial production, construction and infrastructure and agriculture and agri-food processing, and each puts different demands on a door: traffic volume, insurance and fire requirements, and how much downtime an opening can afford. Common questions about doors
What is a low-energy operator, and why does it matter?
A low-energy operator moves the door slowly enough to be safe without a sensor package. The standard behind it, ANSI/BHMA A156.19, requires the door to take at least three seconds to open and at least three seconds to swing from 90 degrees back to 10 degrees, and caps both the kinetic energy of the moving door and the force needed to stop it. That deliberate slowness is why a low-energy door can be activated by a push plate and needs no guide rails, and it is why it costs a fraction of a full-energy automatic entrance.
Do you supply the hardware too, or do we buy that separately?
We supply and fit it — closers, exit devices, locks, cylinders, hinges, thresholds, weatherstripping and the preparation each of them needs in the door and frame. On commercial work that matters more than it sounds: door and frame preparation is done in the shop, so the hardware has to be decided before the door is made, not after it arrives. Where an access control contractor is on the job we coordinate the prep and leave the wiring to them.
How long does it take to install a sliding glass door?
The install is the short part — the lead time is production, because every commercial slider is built to your opening rather than pulled off a shelf. Budget roughly 4–6 weeks to build a manual sliding door and 6–8 weeks for an automatic one, plus about a week on top to schedule the crew and fit it. So from an approved order to a working door, plan on about 5–7 weeks manual and 7–9 weeks automatic. Repairs to a door you already have are a different clock entirely — that is same-day and 24/7. The fitting itself is usually a day on site.
Do you repair glass you did not install?
Yes, and it is most of what we do. We service commercial storefronts, windows, entrance doors and partitions regardless of who supplied them, including framing systems no longer manufactured — those jobs start with identifying the frame and the glazing method before anything is ordered. Because we do the framing side of the trade as well as the glass, when the answer is that the frame has to go we can quote that instead of handing you to another contractor.
Will the veneer match our existing doors?
Usually, and it is worth planning. Veneers are specified by species, cut and match, and can be sequence-matched across a run so a corridor of doors reads as one set. Where an existing building is being extended or partially refurbished, an exact match to doors from a decade ago is not always possible — in that case we will say so and suggest matching a floor at a time rather than pretending.
How long does a steel door take to arrive?
Typically 4–6 weeks to produce a door and frame once the shop drawings are approved, then 1–2 weeks to schedule the job and install it, depending on the size of the project. Stock-size doors in a common gauge and prep can be much faster; rated assemblies, custom sizes, galvannealed and stainless leaves and anything with unusual hardware prep set the schedule. Once it arrives, one door and frame is usually a day's work on site, while a full door schedule on a construction project runs for several weeks.
Four decades of doors for names Ontario knows — Canada’s Wonderland, Tim Hortons, Canadian Tire, the LCBO, Metrolinx, Marriott & Hilton hotels, the University of Toronto — plus thousands of businesses across the GTA. Dependable people, quality products, since 1979.
