Common questions about doors

For a traffic door, is aluminum or fibreglass better?

For an interior traffic opening, neither is the usual answer. Most of these doors are ABS or polyethylene panels, sometimes over a solid core, with a metal or laminated facing where the abuse is heavier. Aluminum frames are common; aluminum leaves are not, because aluminum dents and stays dented. Laminated fibreglass is genuinely good in wet and washdown environments because it does not corrode or absorb. The choice should follow the environment — dry warehouse, wet kitchen, cold room — rather than a material preference.

Do glass partitions need markings on them?

Yes, and it is a safety requirement rather than decoration. Full-height clear glass has to be made visible so nobody walks into it — a band of frosted film, an etched or applied pattern, or a manifestation strip at eye height. Most projects use it for privacy at the same time: a graduated frost, a logo band, or a full frosted panel at seated-eye level. It is inexpensive, it is quick to change later, and it should be in the specification from the start rather than added after somebody's first collision.

How long does it take to install a barrier-free operator?

Typically 1–2 weeks to supply and install the equipment once the opening is surveyed and the specification is approved. A retrofit that needs new electrical to the header takes longer to co-ordinate than the door work itself. Where a whole building or portfolio is being done at once, we survey and quote every opening together and then install them in one mobilisation. On site, one operator is usually installed in a day.

What gauge is a commercial door frame?

16 gauge is the usual interior commercial frame and 14 gauge the exterior and heavy-duty one — one step heavier than the door it carries, because the frame takes the impacts. Lower gauge numbers mean thicker steel. Light 18-gauge frames exist but have no place in a commercial corridor: they flex, and a frame that flexes stops a door latching.

Can you retrofit low-E glass into our existing windows?

Yes, provided the frame will take the unit. This is one of the most common requests we get from hotels, offices and property managers: keep the elevation, change the glass, cut the solar gain and the heat loss. The constraint is the glazing pocket — the frame has to accept the thickness of the new sealed unit, and an older frame built for single glazing often cannot. We check the pocket depth and the frame condition on the first visit and tell you which of the two projects you are actually looking at.

How long does a security shutter take to supply and install?

Typically 4–6 weeks to produce once the opening is measured and the finish is confirmed, then 1–2 weeks to schedule and install — around 5–8 weeks in total, depending on the size of the project. Every one of these is made to the opening, so nothing is off a shelf. Repairs are a different clock: common slats, guides, motors and locks are stocked, and most faults are put right in a single visit. The installation of a single shutter is usually a day, done outside trading hours where it has to be.

Four decades of doors for names Ontario knows — Canada’s Wonderland, Tim Hortons, Canadian Tire, the LCBO, Metrolinx, Marriott & Hilton hotels, the University of Toronto — plus thousands of businesses across the GTA. Dependable people, quality products, since 1979.
