The multi-level parking garage at Grand River Hospital in Kitchener was being restored, and its stairwell doors were part of the work. Complete Concrete Restoration was the general contractor. Canuck removed and hauled away the old door systems and supplied and installed fifteen new hollow metal doors in welded frames, with sidelites and the hardware the hospital asked for.
The garage serves patients and visitors, so it could not close. That decided how every door went in.

The job was first quoted with a different brand of hardware. The hospital asked for something more durable and higher-end, and the specification was changed to Sargent panic bars and LCN 4040XP closers. In a parking garage stairwell, where every door is used all day, that is a sensible upgrade. Some of the hardware came from the US, and it arrived as planned.
One stairwell at a time
Patients and visitors had to be able to use the garage throughout. The doors were replaced one stairwell at a time, so there was always a way in and out.
Replacing every stairwell door at once would have closed the garage. Instead, the crew finished one stairwell before starting the next, so traffic kept flowing through the others.
Storage was the second problem. A busy hospital garage has nowhere to keep doors and frames. So the crew brought only what they expected to install each day, which meant planning the order of work and deliveries opening by opening.
A year between the order and the install
We received the project in June 2023. The hospital reviewed the drawings carefully before approving them in July, and the products went into production right away. They were ready in September, but the garage restoration was not ready for new doors. Installation started in April 2024 and finished in June 2024.
