Glass Aluminum Doors and Windows – MTO Maintenance Patrol Yard Hwy 418 & 401
Project Location: Hwy 401 & Hwy 418, Ontario
Date: June 28, 2024
Client: Ministry of Transportation, Ontario
General Contractor: Amico Design Build Inc.
Canuck Door Systems Co. was selected to supply and install a custom glass aluminum doors and windows package for the MTO Maintenance Patrol Yard located at the intersection of Hwy 401 and Hwy 418. This project involved the complete fabrication, delivery, and installation of Windspec aluminum window and door systems, all finished with a custom Duranar coating to meet the Ministry of Transportation’s design and durability standards. Additionally, the project included the installation of automatic door operators at two entrances to enhance accessibility and comply with Ontario building code requirements.
The scope of work included the supply and installation of high-performance glass aluminum doors and windows, tailored to the project’s specifications. The window package featured Windspec 855 Series aluminum windows finished in a custom Duranar coating, along with Windspec 535 Series aluminum vents equipped with insect screens and matching finishes. For the entrances, Windspec 655 Series exterior frames were paired with 200 Series Doors, while Windspec 630 Series interior frames also accommodated 200 Series Doors to maintain consistency and durability. The glazing system consisted of insulated units incorporating laminated tempered glass, selected for its superior strength and safety performance. To ensure optimal protection against moisture intrusion, caulking was applied at all perimeters, creating a watertight seal around each installed component.
The project was awarded in December 2023, marking the beginning of a detailed planning and coordination phase. Following the submission of comprehensive shop drawings, an extensive review process was conducted to ensure full compliance with the Ministry of Transportation’s specifications. Once the drawings received approval, custom fabrication began promptly in early 2024, aligning with the project’s tight schedule. Installation took place between May and June 2024, culminating in the successful completion of the project on June 28, 2024.
The project featured several key highlights that contributed to its overall success. All aluminum components were finished with a custom Duranar coating, offering a high-performance, durable finish that met the architectural specifications. To ensure accessibility compliance, automatic door operators were installed, providing barrier-free entry in line with building code requirements. Watertight integrity was achieved through the application of complete perimeter caulking, ensuring excellent protection against the elements. Additionally, the project involved custom-fabricated systems, with every component manufactured specifically for this non-inventory contract to meet the unique demands of the site.
The project was completed on time and to exact specifications. The Ministry of Transportation received a modern, durable, and code-compliant aluminum door and window system that will serve the facility reliably for years to come.
